The Sites to See
Fort Davis Fort: Fort Davis was a key post in the defense system of West Texas from 1854-1891. Restored to the 1880's; it now has a visitor center, museum, audio programs, slide shows and self-guided tours. You can actually see the fort from the entrance of Fort Davis Motor Inn & RV Campground.
Located high atop Mount Locke at an altitude of 6,800 ft., McDonald is the third largest observatory in the USA. There is a visitor center, scheduled tours of the dome and daily solar viewing. The observatory also holds evening star parties three times a week.
Town of Fort Davis...is unique in its setting beside the Davis Mountains and offers great shopping, restaurants and historic sites. Take a historic in-town tour on portions of the original Overland Trail. Visit the Chihuahuan Desert Visitor Center, Neill Doll Museum and the Overland Trail Museum.
Marfa Mystery Lights...When the sun sets, the lights appear from out of nowhere and you may see them jump or move. The free off-road viewing area is located 8 miles east of Marfa on Hwy. 90.
Prude Ranch...Family owned and operated quest ranch offers western fun for families, groups, birders and summer camps for boys and girls. Scheduled group tours to Mexico's Copper Canyon are available. 1.915.426.3202
Birding In Area...The Davis Mountains and nearby Ranch Lands are becoming very popular areas for birders. Approximately 130 species of birds have been sighted.
